The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) maintains a Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program (FFFIPP). The program was created in 1998 by Congress to address the problem of work-related firefighter deaths, and to implement a firefighter safety initiative. The program conducts independent investigations of firefighter line-of-duty deaths. NIOSH is unable to investigate every fatality because of the program’s limited resources. NIOSH determines which firefighter fatalities to investigate based upon its Prioritization Guidelines. These guidelines prioritize investigations of trauma related deaths during training, at a structure fire or in unique circumstances as well as non-trauma related deaths that meet certain medical criteria. Reports are anonymous. They do not include the names of the fire department, the fallen firefighter or other firefighters involved in the incident. Reports are posted on the
NIOSH website. All NIOSH reports and publications are public domain information and may be copied and reproduced for training and educational purposes. Complied below are copies of the reports regarding the line of duty deaths of firefighters in New England from 1998 to 2021. These are organized from oldest to most recent
and the names of the reports include the state from which each report originated.
